The Law of the Spirit of Life

“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.” (Romans 8:2)

The law of sin is just as real and constant as the law of gravity. Gravity works in any place in the world, it is no respecter of persons. The same applies to sin. Sin and death are spiritual laws that govern mankind. Whether they believe in it or not, their behavior is controlled and influenced by this unavoidable principle. Now for the believer we are enabled to operate by a higher law. It’s not that the law of sin ceases to exists, it’s that we are transcending the grip of the law of sin by operating out of a higher and more powerful law. I love the analogy Watchman Nee uses in this regard. Gravity works in all places and at all times, but a sparrow is transcending that law every time it flies, because the law of flight that God has designed it with is more powerful than the law of gravity, and therefore flutters around the sky with little to no effort, as though gravity doesn’t even exist. The same is true for the law of sin and the law of the Spirit. The law of the Spirit is a higher and infinitely more powerful law and therefore enables us to come out from under the control of this lower and weaker law, which in turn translates into a freedom from sin that is just as natural as the sparrow flying through the atmosphere. As Watchman Nee points out, if you were to ask a sparrow about the law of gravity it would have to admit that it’s never even heard of such a thing. The law of sin is ever present, but if we tap into the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, then we will operate out of the higher law of the Spirit and will live free from the grip and control of sin. This is the answer to the issue presented in Roman’s 7. We are not debtors to the flesh, to live according to it’s rotten desires. If we live by the Spirit, the deeds of the flesh will be crucified and put to rest as we soar beyond its control into the clear blue skies of kingdom of God.
