The tragedy of sin is that our spiritual senses become deadened and calloused to where we no longer experience Him. Sin is a state of insanity that alienates us from a relationship with God.
“For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)
When Adam sinned he didn’t only break God’s law and become a sinner, he fell from glory. He lost that connection to the presence of God that he once enjoyed. He slipped out of God-consciousness and into the horrible slavery of sin-consciousness.
It’s not enough that we simply turn from sin, we need to turn from sin back to the place we fell from, that place of encounter with God, that place of glory and fellowship in His presence. This is what the gospel offers!
“Repent therefore and be converted so that your sins may be blotted out, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.” (Acts 3:19)
Repentance is incomplete until we drink of the well of glory that He has prepared for us. Peter pointed to the fact that the end result of repentance is to be refreshed by the presence of God! This is the whole point of the gospel, to turn from sin, and enter back into the union and fellowship with the Father that Adam lost. We see this same principle echoed when Jesus Himself promises that if we open the door He will come inside us and feast with us, He Himself being the very meal of glory that sets us free to be sons and daughters of God.
“Behold I stand at the door and knock, if anyone hear my voice and open up, I will come into him and eat with him and he with Me.” (Revelation 3:20)
