“But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Isreal; after those days, says the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they will be my people.” (Jeremiah 31:33)
One of the massive differences between the old and new covenants is the relationship between the believer and the law. Under the old order the law was external; it was written on stone and was to be applied from the outside in. It was not men’s nature to do those things which the law required. They were limited to mimicking holy behavior but were not holy in the core of their beings. The new covenant is revolutionary because it takes the law which was once an external code and writes it on the tablets of our hearts. Before the cross it was not our nature to tell the truth, to be faithful to our spouses, or to lay down our lives for others, but now because Christ has branded His law into the depths of our inner-man, it then is the nature and craving of our being to do what the law commands. The transition between the old and new is a change from external behavior management to an internal relationship with the Holy Spirit. The outflow of this wonderful connection with God is the supernatural fruit of the Spirit. Godly living flows from being filled with God. Sin then is abnormal and fights against the grain of our new nature; it is polar opposite to our new creation design. Righteous living should be our default setting due to the fact that it’s coded into our spiritual DNA.
